Why should we even care about the culture’s ever-increasing skepticism about God, Christianity, and the Bible? If you’re a parent this should be easy to answer. You will one day, if you haven’t already, send your child out into the world where they will be exposed to this culture. Don’t you think it’s pretty important that before you send them out on their own to equip them with logical reasons for why Christianity is true and good?
In this episode of the Defending Christianity Podcast, award-winning author Dr. Frank Turek joins us to talk about his book, I Don’t Have Enough Faith to be an Atheist. Dr. Turek and I discuss how we can know Christianity is true by looking at two of the four questions which come from the book: Does Truth Exist? Does God Exist?
Dr. Turek is convinced that Christianity is true. There is enough evidence to be assured of this, but what kind of assurance? Absolute certainly or beyond a reasonable doubt? The evidence from I Don’t Have Enough Faith to be an Atheist in fact shows why Christianity is true beyond a reasonable doubt. In other words, Christianity might require faith, but the evidence for it makes it reasonable to do so.
Does Truth Exist?
People today can’t handle the truth, according to Dr. Turek. They say things like “There is no truth” or “All truth is relative.” But why are these wrong? Dr. Turek explains:
It’s self defeating to say there is no truth. Why? Because all you have to do is ask that person ‘Is that true?’ Is it truth that there’s no truth? If it’s true that there is no truth, then the claim ‘there is no truth’ can’t be true, but it claims to be true! It’s a self defeating statement.
‘All truth is relative.’ You simply ask them, ‘Is that a relative truth?’ If someone says ‘There are no absolutes,’ ask them ‘Are you absolutely sure?’ If someon says ‘You can’t know anything,’ you should ask them ‘How do you know that you can’t know anything?’
What you are pointing out here is that it’s literally undeniable. Of course truth exists. The only question is, ‘What is true?’ There really isn’t ‘your truth’ there’s just ‘the truth.’Frank Turek, Defending Christianity Podcast
Does God Exist?
Dr. Turek usually gives three arguments for the existence of God:
- Cosmological Argument: the Universe had a beginning
- Teleological Argument: the fine-tuning of the universe
- Moral Argument: if there is a moral law, there must be a moral law-giver
All of this proves that there is a theist God of some kind. The way to show that the God who exists is the God of the Bible is to look at the evidence for the resurrection of Jesus. If Jesus rose from the dead, Christianity is true.
